Registration Deadline Looms For Thunder On Cocoa Beach

With its new online race-team registration system in place, Powerboat P1/P1 Offshore has eliminated on-site registration for all its race sites, starting with Thunder On Cocoa Beach, May 19-22. Registration for the East-Central Florida contest closes May 16.

There will be no on-site registration in Cocoa Beach as the United Kingdom headquartered race-producer has taken registration for the 2022 events it is producing entirely online. All entries and payments much be received via the online system by the deadline.

So far, 28 teams across multiple classes have registered through the system and six Class 1 teams have confirmed their commitment to Cocoa Beach. The organizers are expecting no less than 50 teams to compete in the event, which is the first of eight races in the American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series.

Once a team signs up for its first Powerboat P1-produced, data entry is minimal, according to Cole McGowan, the director of communications for Powerboat P1 USA.

“The new system requires teams to submit all of their boat and team information once at the beginning of the season,” he explained. “Once that’s completed, teams can enter any future races with all of their pre-populated information at the click of a button. All race entry fees are now being collected exclusively online, eliminating on-site transactions to increase efficiency both for teams and Powerboat P1.

The same online registration system will be in place for P1-produced races in Sarasota, Fla., and St. Petersburg, Fla.—both of which are part of the eight race APBA series—later this season.

An APBA member-organization, Powerboat P1 worked closely with Andy Houldsworth from OmniWeb, its Internet services partner, to develop the system.

“The vision for this system was to automate the process such that the teams must only submit the required information to us once annually in a single action, rather than repeatedly throughout the year with a long paper trail and long lines at registration on race weekends,” said McGowan. “Now, when competitors arrive on site they simply sign a waiver to collect their wristband credentials for access-control at a race and get on with their weekend.”
