Racing: Race World Offshore Cancels Wednesday Races In Key West
Despite the organization’s best intentions, Key West, Fla.-based Race World Offshore, which is producing the American Power Boat Association/Union Internationale Motonautique Offshore World Championships in Key West this week, announced tomorrow’s first round of racing has been cancelled.

After attending this afternoon’s Monroe County Emergency Operations Center Briefing with city officials and Monroe County officials, RWO officials informed the race teams as well as the Key West city manager that Wednesday’s races have been called off.
“The National Weather Service has provided us an update on Tropical Storm Nicole approaching the Florida Peninsula and Lower Keys,” the letter from RWO race director Rodrick Cox stated. “They predicted sustained winds of 25 mph with gusts up to 35 and 40 mph with limited rainfall expectations in the Lower Keys and Key West. Based on the prediction of the National Weather Service, Race World Offshore has canceled all four races scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 9, in an abundance of safety.
“The National Weather Service is predicting improving weather conditions on Thursday, Nov. 10, and through the upcoming weekend,” the letter continued. “Race World Offshore will resume races on Friday, Nov. 11, and Sunday, Nov. 13.”

“It’s a shame (the races were cancelled),” said veteran throttleman Steve Curtis of the Class 1 Huski Chocolate team. “We ran today and both boats ran really well so from that perspective it’s a bit of a pain, but I guess the main problem is the cranes. Either way, we are really looking forward to Friday.”
