Put March 1 On Your Calendar—Now

Though summer isn’t right around the corner, planning for it reminds you that winter isn’t eternal, that eventually it will release its frigid grip and soon enough you’ll be back on the water under blues skies this season. Most summer boating events will open registration in the next couple of months. But there is one date—March 1—you definitely need to put on your calendar if you’re interested in hitting the Boyne Thunder Poker Run, July 11-12, in Boyne City, Mich., and the 1,000 Islands Poker Run, July 17-18, in Clayton, N.Y., this year.

Because registration for both events opens on that day, the first Saturday in March.
Boyne Thunder will sell out within an hour or so. That’s just what it does thanks to insatiable demand and a limited supply of 120 total spots. The 1,000 Islands happening will take a bit longer to reach maximum capacity, but it will get there and will end up with a fleet of similar size.
Both events have already opened—and in Boyne Thunder’s case closed—sponsor registration. The Boyne event sold out all 60 sponsor slots in a record-setting four days. When general registration opens, would-be participants will be vying for another 60 spots.
Sponsor registration for the 1,000 Island Charity Poker Run ongoing, but Phoenix-based DCB Performance Marine has signed as the presenting sponsor for the 2024 event. And that’s great news for all involved.

Winter isn’t going anywhere for a few months, of course. But in less than two weeks, general registration for two of summer’s finest and most coveted events opens on the same day.
Signing up for one or both might just warm your heart, if only for a moment.—Matt Trulio
