Pro Class 1 New Handle For APBA-Sanctioned Category

Pro Class 1 New Handle For APBA-Sanctioned Category

Following the unanimous decision by the then-Class 1 team owners to run under American Power Boat Association rather than Union Internationale Motonautique governance following the Midwest Challenge in August, a name change for the category was as inevitable as it was necessary. The new name for the APBA-sanctioned group is Pro Class 1.

On Monday, Randy Scism, the owner and founder of MTI in Wentzville, Mo., was elected class representative by the team owners. Not only does Scism have more Class 1 experience under the UIM banner than anyone currently in the sport, he has a factory-backed team coming to the Pro Class 1 ranks in 2025.

“I am going to help them try to take it to the next level,” Scism said.

The new name and more will be among the topics today during a “State Of The Union” meeting for APBA members at the Race Village registration tent for this week’s Race World Offshore Key West World Championships. The meeting will be led by APBA president Chris Fairchild and Paul Rose of the three-person Offshore Racing Commission that includes APBA leadership stalwarts Mark Weber and Fred Hauenstein, Jr.

Canceled yesterday thanks to Tropical Storm Rafael, the first day of racing is scheduled to kick off tomorrow at 10 a.m. Click here to view the current schedule of races.
