Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Powerboats dealers got their first look at the company’s new 400 SS performance center console during the Miami International Boat Show in February. Since then, the Fort Myers, Fla.-based company reportedly has taken 53 orders for the newest edition to the Nor-Tech center console line. By even the most conservative measure, that’s makes the quad Mercury Racing 450R outboard engine-powered 40-footer an instant hit.
During Nor-Tech’s annual dealer meeting two weeks ago at the Westin Resort in nearby Cape Coral, Fla., those representatives got to see the 40-footer in action.

The first 400 SS went to Trond Schou, who co-founded Nor-Tech with fellow Norwegian Nils Johnsen more than 30 years ago. But Schou didn’t keep it long. Not long after the Miami show, he sold the boat to an eager Nor-Tech customer.
“We are always working on the next generation of center consoles,” said Schou. “That’s what the 400 SS is—it’s kind of like a smaller version of our 450 and 500. It has a lot of styling and feature updates.
“We tend to start with bigger boats and work them into our smaller models—that’s been our history,” he added, then laughed. “And we always have something new coming.”
Among the Nor-Tech dealers who attended the event was Michael Knoblock of American Custom Marine in Kimball, Mich. He returned home eager to start selling the new model, which he said impressed him.
Said Trond Schou, “We are always working on the next generation of center consoles.”
“I just wrote an order for one this week,” said Michael Knoblock, Nor-Tech’s dealer in Kimball, Mich. “I think it’s a great. new model. It has a lot of really cool updates including a new roof design that like that on the 450 and 550 comes out of the console rather than the cockpit sole, which gives you more space. It has a wider front entrance to the cabin, and the cabin has a fully enclosed head locker and shower. The windshield is made of glass instead of Lexan and the table up front is recessed into the sole when it’s stored.”
According Schou, the Nor-Tech crew made some subtle tweaks to the boat’s hull, which is based off the company’s 390 Sport center console model. “It’s fast,” said Schou, though he declined to supply a top-speed for the 40-footer.
“No one will be disappointed with the top speed or the acceleration,” he added.
