Of the trio of go-fast boating events this weekend—the previously Lake Champlain Poker Run based in Vermont, the Rock The River Fun Run in Ohio (read the story) and the Rocky Top Power Run in Tennessee—all faced weather threats at one time or another. While morning thunderstorms on Friday only delayed first lunch of the weekend for the 120-boat, fifth annual Cincinnati happening, the following’s day lunch went off on time and without incident.

But the Rocky Top Power Run wasn’t so lucky as intermittent rain and wind made for a long and at times disorganized day for the 135 boats—approximately 35 of the high-performance kind—in the run. Organizer Matt Rogers stayed optimistic and upbeat, despite the day’s challenges.

“For what we had to deal with, I think we hit it out of the park,” Rogers said. “I learned so much this year.”

The Lake Champlain Poker Run did not lack for big-time hardware.

The luckiest of the three events weather-wise, the Lake Champlain happening saw just clouds and wind throughout the weekend. The early week forecast had called for rain, but that prediction fell flat and the event record-setting 75 boats didn’t have to deal with rain.
