The most consistently pretty water of any domestic offshore powerboat race is not in Florida, not even in Key West. Year in and year out, that distinction belongs to the St. Clair River Classic and the St. Clair River itself outside of Detroit.

When it comes to pure natural beauty, the St. Clair River—the aquatic playing field for tomorrow’s St. Clair River Classic—is hard to beat. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.

Blasphemy, you say? Take a trip to the St. Clair River someday. Chances are good your mind will change. But even if it doesn’t you’ll have seen one of the prettiest waterways in the country.

Racers and fans were reminded of that during today’s practice session in advance of tomorrow’s contest, which has attracted approximately 40 teams (a full roster and race schedule will be released in the morning) to the Offshore Powerboat Association-produced event. The St. Clair River Classic is the fourth of eight races in the American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series. It is a favorite among competitors for the river’s natural beauty and the passion of the fans who call it their home-water.

Putting the beauty of the St. Clair River in perspective.

Pete Boden, speedonthewater.com’s chief photographer. captured much of today’s practice session, and the waters of the St. Clair River showed their typically vibrant colors. Tomorrow’s action is slated to begin at noon, according to the current schedule on the OPA website.

Speedonthewater.com contributing editor Eric Colby will provide a comprehensive end-of-day race report loaded with Boden’s action-filled images tomorrow on the website. In the meantime, enjoy the St. Clair River water colors of today.
