Performance Boat Center Fall Fun Run—100-Plus In The Sun

One of four Pure Platinum Series Skater Powerboats catamarans ever built by the Douglas, Mich., company, Mike and Angela Goldbaugh’s 38-footer, which they purchased pre-owned in July 2023 and repowered with new Mercury Racing 1100 engines, will always be a rare boat. You could even call the 388 model that the Goldbaughs dubbed LATE FEE$ X3 a “collectible” creation. You wouldn’t be wrong.

But yesterday, it was but one of more than 100 boats—albeit a snazzy one—record-setting Performance Boat Center Fall Fun Run fleet. The two-stop run was the fifth and final organized Lake of Ozarks event of the year for the couple from Alabama.

It was the largest event produced by the dealership this year.

“The weather was nothing less than perfect—it was an awesome day,” said Mike Goldbaugh. “There wasn’t a lot of traffic on the lake, but don’t misunderstand. With the weather being so perfect, there were still plenty of boats on the water.”

The Performance Boat Center showroom crowd looked a bit like it does during the daylight hours of the dealership’s Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Welcome Party.

The fleet started from Performance Boat Center headquarters in Osage Beach, Mo., and headed to The Cave Bar and Grill in Gravois Mills for a long, social lunch. From there the group headed to Docknockers Original restaurant in Lake Ozark before returning to Performance Boat Center for a post-run celebration.

Though the turnout cracked the 100-boat mark, the daytime temperatures barely reached the low-90s. And humidity was relatively low.

Fine powerboats and friendly faces were everywhere during yesterday’s event.

“It was like June in October,” said Michael Hall of Performance Boat Center. “I could not believe the weather—or the turnout.”

Speedonthewater.com contributing photographer Jeff Helmkamp, who shot a half-dozen events at Lake of the Ozarks this year, was on scene to capture the day on the water. Helmkamp said he hadn’t seen a turnout like yesterday’s for a Performance Boat Center-produced happening since the days when the multi-brand dealership, which carries the MTI, Performance Powerboats and Sunsation Powerboats brands, hosted the annual Cigarette Owners Rendezvous.

Said Performance Boat Center’s Michael Hall (center), “It was like June in October.”

Helmkamp worked mostly from an MTI-V 50 center console owned by Chris and Stephanie Martins, who live in Arizona. And the Martins were far from the only participants from out of state.

“There were people from Georgia, Michigan, Louisiana, Michigan and more,” Helmkamp said. “There were boats from Sunsation, Cigarette, MTI, Performance Powerboats, Outerlimits and Skater—just to name a few.

“Performance Boat Center really does have a fantastic following,” he added.
