Although he didn’t take the boat back home to Texas following last weekend’s Performance Boat Center Spring Fun Run on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks, Heath Kirkwood got his first opportunity to run his 2017 Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats SV 43 canopied raceboat that was recently converted into a five-seat pleasure boat by the talented team at Waves and Wheels in Osage Beach, Mo.

Following the conversion that included final paint touch-ups courtesy of Les Voudrie and the team at Precision Paint Worx also in Osage Beach, Kirkwood headed to the lake to put the former Superboat Extreme-class raceboat, which is powered by a pair of 800-plus-hp, 572-cubic-inch, spec-class engines from Sterling Performance, through the paces.

“The boat ran well and everything about it is super nice,” Kirkwood said after getting a chance to drive the 43-footer with its new BAM 1550 transmissions, not to mention all the creature comforts that didn’t exist inside the cockpit before the conversion. “It was nice to give it a little shakedown and get a feel for how everything worked inside. The guys at Waves and Wheels did a great job with such an extensive project. It took longer than planned, but having the three rear seats and the rear hatch takes this boat to another level.

“There’s a little punch list to button up before the boat comes home,” continued Kirkwood, whose home water is Lake Texoma. “There were so many pieces to this boat and the project continued to evolve that there are some things to tidy up. All in all, the boat is awesome. Between the lights, the stereo, the electronics and the overall appearance, it’s definitely a pleasure boat now.”

Kirkwood said he plans to run the SV 43 in next month’s Texas Outlaw Challenge Shoot-Out competition in Clear Lake as well as in the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout at the end of August. He’ll also be participating in the Texoma Throw Down in mid August alongside his good friend and event organizer, Casey Moore.

According to Justin Wagner, the owner and founder of Waves and Wheels who was featured in the final episode of the 2021 Speed On The Water In The Lead series, the Outerlimits ended up being one of the team’s most challenging—and rewarding—projects as of late.

“This was a major undertaking but it turned out to be an incredible project,” said Wagner, who joined Waves and Wheels rigging manager Josh Roark for a video featuring the project produced by Andy Sievers that you can watch here or above. “I really love how the rear hatch came out and the cockpit accessibility it provides. It’s a game-changer for a boat like this. All of the panels and trim are hand-crafted like the upholstery for the seats. We ended up keeping most of the bulkhead integrity behind the front seats and we added new custom carbon-fiber dash panels and a center console with custom switches and controls so you can throttle from either seat now. There were no rear seats so we fabricated the cells and did the foam work for the three seats. Everything inside the boat, including the bulkheads, the dash and each windshield, was wrapped and form-fitted—it looks like a brand new boat inside.

“All of the multi-color lighting, from the cockpit, engine bay, speaker pods and underwater, is controlled through Bluetooth,” he added. “The boat is loaded with a Bluave Marine Audio system that is integrated into the GPS and there are a lot of billet pieces. Heath even had some custom-made billet parts sent to us for the boat. We also removed the old air conditioning system and updated that.”
