Outerlimits Clients ‘Downsize’ To SC 37 Catamaran

Outerlimits Clients ‘Downsize’ To SC 37 Catamaran

A few years back, Donnie MacLeod of Evansville, Ind., went boat shopping. His wife, Cara, was hoping he’d buy a cruiser, maybe even a yacht. Instead, he brought back a used Outerlimits Offshore Powerboat SL 50X powered by Mercury Racing 1550/1350 engines. The “X” designation stands for extended for “extended cockpit” as the boat was originally ordered by Canadian Dave Scotto, who wanted space for an additional row of bolsters.

With his eyes on something still plenty sporty but far more manageable at the docks for two people than a 50-foot V-bottom, MacLeod sold the boat earlier this year as he had already ordered an SC 37 catamaran from the Bristol, R.I., company. He arrived in Bristol yesterday to take delivery and enjoy his first test ride in the Mercury Racing 450R outboard engine-powered 37-footer.

“I love it,” said MacLeod, who will keep the cat in Kentucky at Kuttawa Harbor Marina on the shores of Lake Barkley. “I can’t wait to take it on the road to Michigan City (Ind.), Key West (Fla.) and everywhere in between.”

“You can’t beat the acceleration and speed,” he added. “The little cat is an all-around fun speed-racer.”

A closer look.

Not only did Stephen Miles Design originally paint the pre-owned 50-foot bottom the MacLeods enjoyed but eventually sold, the Owensboro, Ky., outfit painted their new 37-footer.

“Painting this SC 37 was an especially cool experience for the team at SMD,” said Miles, who co-owns a houseboat with MacLeod, a cherished longtime friend, in Kuttawa Harbor Marina. “With Donnie only living 40 minutes down the road, he made plenty of visits to the shop during the painting process. Knowing Donnie like I do, I could tell he was very giddy upon each visit to see his paintjob coming to life.”

MacLeod’s SC 37 is delivery No. 8 for Outerlimits. In addition to Stephen Miles Design graphics, the carbon-fiber boat has a trio of Garmin GPS units at the dash, custom SeaDek flooring on the sole and a predominantly Alcantara interior from Kutting Edge Interiors of O’Fallon, Mo.

From any angle, the MacLeod’s 37-footer is a beauty.

“The delivery went really well,” said Dan Kleitz, Outerlimits’ national sales manager. “I showed Donnie all the ins and outs of how to run the boat properly and we had a great time on the water. Now he is on his way home.”

At least for the moment, Donnie MacLeod is done boat-shopping. But Cara MacLeod still might have a surprise or two—definitely two—coming her way. Her husband is already eyeing Mercury Racing’s new 500R outboards for a future re-power.
