Offshore Racing Youth Movement Continuing In Sarasota With Peyton Riviero

The daughter of Florida-based Mod V-class racer Pete Riviero of The Firm team, 18-year-old Peyton Riviero will make her offshore racing debut alongside veteran throttleman Julian Maldonado in the Bracket 700 class during the upcoming Powerboat P1-produced Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix. Riviero and Maldonado, the throttleman for the defending Super Stock-class world champion Jackhammer team, will run a 22-foot Activator with a Mercury Racing 300R outboard engine in the class.

The news was announced in a press release from the team this morning.

“We are looking for her to get ‘seat-time’ and gain valuable experience in a race, racing alongside one of the sport’s very best throttlemen,” said her father in the release. “I just want her to finish and be safe.

“This is arguably one of the most competitive classes in offshore racing, and she will be competing with some seasoned young guns who battle every single race,” he added.

Like Taylor Scism of the 450R Factory Stock-class TS Motorsports team, Riviero is among the very few female racers currently in sport. (Class 1 Morpheus 8 team back-up driver Victoria Rand of Denmark has yet to compete in her first offshore race.) Reached via text message this afternoon, Scism—now 28 years old and a world champion—was delighted by the news.

“I think it is great we have more young racers joining the fleet this year,” wrote Scism, who spearheaded the Mercury Racing 450R outboard-powered class. “We have some excellent talent out on the course but it’s exciting to see the next generation of racing coming up—even more so, have more females in the sport. Peyton will be a great addition to racing and I hope this inspires even more young girls to get involved.”

Riviero will run this 22-footer alongside Julian Maldonado in Sarasota next month.

So far, three Bracket 700-class teams have registered for the September 13-15 event. Based on past turnouts and current Bracket 700 teams in the sport, the field likely will double by race day.
