Nor-Tech Unveiling New Quad-Outboard Cat And More At Fort Lauderdale Show

Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats always displays a strong mix of performance-oriented center consoles at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, and this year’s event set for October 30-November 3 in the South Florida city will be no different for the Cape Coral, Fla., company. Of the six models the builder plans to showcase—two indoors and four outdoors—five are center consoles. That includes 390 Sport center console No. 500, which marks a major milestone for the builder with its flagship model.

But Nor-Tech’s show-stopper, at least as it applies to new models on display, will be its 40-foot catamaran powered by quad Mercury Racing 500R outboard engines and dubbed the 4000 Supercat. The company modified the existing hull for the 40-footer, but added a new deck with cockpit seating for up to 10 passengers, a cabin and a bathroom. The boat has an 11-foot beam.

“It is based on our original concept for the 4000 Roadster, which means a full offshore boat with a deep tunnel and a lot of creature comforts,” explained Trond Schou, the co-founder and president of the company. “We already have several orders for it.

“It’s a totally different direction than other builders have gone with their outboard cats, and we’re giving it enough power to handle all that weight,” he added.

To that end, the 40-footer has a 250-gallon fuel capacity.

The new model is based off an existing catamaran hull modified for outboard power.

“I intentionally rode in the boat the first time full of fuel and loaded up with the equivalent of the weight of 10 people,” said Peter Roberts, who co-owns Nor-Tech dealer Double R Performance with his brother, Raymond, outside Toronto, Canada. “It’s honestly the first outboard-powered cat over 30 feet long I’ve ever been impressed with. It actually accelerates when it isn’t empty—it accelerates hard when full of fuel and people—and has the best rough-water ability of any outboard cat more than 30 feet long that I’ve experienced.”

Headed to Double R Performance after the show, the cat will be displayed outside at the docks. So, too, will hull No. 500 for the 390 Sport, Nor-Tech’s most-popular offering. The 39-footer will be delivered to its owner, a big name in the high-performance scene who is keeping his new ride a secret, when the event concludes.

Thanks to a Midwest Boating Center customer, the builder also will showcase a 450 Sport center console at the docks. A 340 Sport will complete the outdoor display.

Nor-Tech will exhibit a SuperFish center console, though the builder isn’t certain if it will be a 39-foot or 45-foot version, in the show’s convention center venue. In a first-time move, the company also will have 400 SS center console at the indoor venue.

“In the past, we have displayed our center consoles set up for fishing in the convention center,” said Henrik Margård, the company’s chief operating officer. “We want to show the 40 to a different audience, so we decided to bring it inside.”

Said Trond Schou of the new model, “It is based on our original concept for the 4000 Roadster, which means a full offshore boat with a deep tunnel and a lot of creature comforts.”
