New Video: Water Street Confidential With Chris Fairchild and Mike Makus – Speed on the Water
When Mercury Racing developed its four-stroke 360- and 200-hp APX outboard engines for tunnel-boat racing, the company brought on veteran competitor Chris Fairchild, the current president of the American Power Boat Association, as a test-driver during the durability phase of the program on Lake X in St. Cloud, Fla. Fairchild, in turn, recruited his young friend and fellow Formula One tunnel-boat racer Mike Makus, an engineer at the Fond du Lac, Wis., high-performance marine engine and accessories company, as a much-needed second test-driver.

And that made them the ideal pairing for Water Street Confidential, an eight-episode series celebrating Mercury Racing’s 50th anniversary.
Throughout the video, their mentor-protégé relationship is obvious and touching. More so, however, is their mutual respect—they’ve actually competed against one another—and deep friendship.
As it happens, Fairchild and Makus were on hand at the Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge last month in Sheboygan, Wis. Fairchild was there to represent APBA. Makus, on the other hand, competed in Formula One tunnel-boat races on Saturday and Sunday. That video went live this morning.
