New Story Series—Celebrating Nor-Tech At 35
Following on the heels of the popular “Skater At 50” and “MTI At 25” series celebrating milestones for both venerable high-performance powerboat builders, speedonthewater.com is launching “Nor-Tech At 35.” Every Thursday throughout 2025, a new story focused on the Cape Coral, Fla., company, which was started 35 years ago (give or take a few months) by Norwegian immigrants Trond Schou and Nils Johnsen, will go live on the website.

Schou and Johnsen didn’t bring a lot of preconceived notions based on existing go-fast V-bottoms V-bottom sportboats and—some 10 years ago—center consoles in the United States market. Instead, they brought uncommon creativity, boundless energy fueled by a deep well of “Why the hell not?” attitude.
The principal designer for the brand, Johnsen took stylistic inspiration from luxury-performance automobile world. Nor-Tech catamarans, V-bottoms and sport yachts didn’t just perform well in open water. They looked like nothing else in the U.S. segment.

Schou, on the other hand, was the perfect front-man for the company. A charismatic breath of fresh air in an industry that desperately needed one, he took to his Nor-Tech leadership role like the sun-loving, fun-loving Scandinavian he is. He quickly became on the industry’s most enjoyable characters.
Like the two series before it, “Nor-Tech At 35” will not be a linear, blow-by-blow history of the brand. Instead, it will offer glimpses of the company’s past, present and—because history is dynamic—future.
