New Orleans Grand Prix Producer Planning To Include Kilo Runs

The first event in the Powerboat P1-produced Triple Crown offshore racing series, the inaugural New Orleans Grand Prix is set for June 27-29 on Lake Pontchartrain. In addition to two of racing, the organizers plan to hold kilometer runs that weekend.

Unlike top-speed contests, kilometer runs are timed events that measure the average speed of raceboat during two passes—in opposite directions—on a one-kilometer course.
Thomas Covington is the United States representative for Powerboat P1, which is an American Power Boat Association group-member. According to Covington, the P1 organization’s Michelle Petro has applied for an APBA kilo-run sanction. If approved, APBA officials will be on scene to set up and operate timing equipment and record results.
Covington said his group also plans to hold a shootout-style top-speed, where peak speed is captured on radar, contest during the event.
According to a Powerboat P1 press release, net proceeds from the event will benefit the P1 Marine Foundation, with funds earmarked to benefit Bucktown Harbor Park and Marina Foundation and the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation.
“We are thrilled to kick off our racing season in Metairie, Louisiana,” Covington said in the release. “We anticipate fierce competition as teams push their limits to claim the trophy at this prestigious race.”

The New Orleans Grand Prix is presented by Harvey Gulf International Marine, Councilman Hans Liljeberg, Jefferson Parish Council District 5, and Visit Jefferson Parish. Following the Louisiana event, the Triple Crown series will head to Sheboygan, Wis., for the Sheboygan Midwest Challenge August 8-10. The series will finish September 5-7 in Southwest Florida with St, Petersburg Grand Prix.
