MTI At 25—Dam Drama For A Great Cause – Speed on the Water
Close-knit as they can be, members of the Lake of the Ozarks go-fast boating community—from offshore racers to Lake of the Ozarks Shootout competitors—also can be mighty competitive with one another. And so it was in mid-August, 2022 when MTI’s Taylor Scism, her father, Randy, and her fiancé Shaun Peters ran her 450R Factory Stock-class MTI 390XR catamaran to a new record at last year’s Dam Challenge in which competitors run from Bagnell Dam to Truman Dam and back. The Scisms set a new record of 1 hour, 37 minutes and 5 seconds for the 189-mile run on the Central Missouri waterway.

The new mark topped the record set just one day before by driver Brad Ekstam and throttleman Rusty Williams of Performance Boat Center in Ekstam’s FASS Diesel Fuel Systems 42-foot catamaran by more than two minutes. Mechanical issues knocked the MTI cockpit duo out of that day’s action early, so they opted to give it another try solo the following morning. And a new record was born in less than 24 hours.
“That was some of the best boating I’ve ever done at the Lake of the Ozarks,” Taylor Scism said following their record-setting run, then laughed. “The water was glass the entire time.”
In the process, the Scisms and Peters raised $70,000 for Make-A-Wish of Missouri and Kansas. Bragging rights aside, that’s what the 2022 Dam Challenge was all about.
The event didn’t materialize this year and, given the time remaining in the 2023 season, likely. But it is sure to return, because charity fuels competition in the already competitive Lake of the Ozarks go-fast boating community.
