Miss Wex Apache In For Pacific Rum Run – Speed on the Water
For the second time this season, a vintage Apache V-bottom will tackle an Ocean Cup Series event. The Miss Wex team of Eric and Machs Wex are registered for the fourth annual Pacific Rum Run, which is set for September 29 and once again will happen concurrently with the Pacific Air Show. The father-and-son duo will attempt to set a new record in their 42-footer for the 110-mile run from Huntington Beach, Calif., around Catalina Island and back to its starting point.

Eric and Machs Wex spent four years restoring their vintage V-bottom.
“My father was one of the original boat racers for Don Aronow and Cigarette in the early 1970s and I have been driving offshore powerboats since I was 10 years old,” said Eric Wex in a press release from the event organizers/producers. “To now be sharing a sport that I love so dearly with my son Machs’ is a life’s dream.
“We’ve done poker runs and other high-speed events, all the way from the Florida Keys to Lake Havasu but being able to compete for a world wecord adds a whole other level to our scope of success,” he added.
In early June, offshore powerboat racing veterans Lorne Leibel, Ryan Beckley and Bob Latham ran Leibel’s 47-foot Apache built in the 1980s to a new record in the 128-mile Gateway Challenge from West Palm Beach, Fla., to West End, Bahama.
Five teams currently are registered for the Pacific Rum Run, including the father-and-daughter pairing of Michael and Kristal Drury. The Drurys also completed the Gateway Marathon their 28-foot LaveyCraft V-bottom dubbed Revelation Racing.
Said Keli Gunn, the team coordinator for the Ocean Cup Series, “Family teams are a terrific addition to the Ocean Cup.”
Said Eric Wex, “Being able to compete for a world record adds a whole other level to our scope of success.”
