Michigan Maritime Museum to Host Event On Tuskegee Airplane Wreck

Michigan Maritime Museum to Host Event On Tuskegee Airplane Wreck

The Michigan Maritime Museum will continue its Whispers Across the Water series on April 16 with a presentation about the Tuskegee airplane that crashed into Lake Huron in 1944. Guest presenter and Michigan’s State Maritime Archeologist Wayne Lusardi will share his experiences documenting and recovering the wreck.

The plane, a Bell P39 Aircobra flown by Tuskegee airman Lieutenant Frank Moody, crashed into the lake during a training mission in 1944. Moody was killed in the crash, and the aircraft remained lost until divers discovered the wreck in 2014. Since then, in partnership with multiple agencies and organizations, Lusardi has documented most of the scattered pieces of the wreck, and has actively worked to recover and conserve the aircraft at an exhibit in Detroit.

Lectures are $10 per person and free for Museum members. Lectures are proudly sponsored by Nielsen-Wells Grant Fund and Mike & Susan Smith.
