Join the Michigan Maritime Museum on November 10th, 2023, to commemorate the 48th anniversary of the sinking of the famed Edmund Fitzergerald, whose legend as once the largest ship to sail the Great Lakes is now remembered as the largest shipwreck on Lake Superior.

In Partnership with the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, the Michigan Maritime Museum will be live streaming the ceremony from Whitefish Point in the R.B. Annis Gallery, with the traditional ringing of the bell 30 times and a guest speaker. There will also be a special display of materials from the collections with curatorial specialist Eric Harmsen on hand to answer questions.

The event is free to the public, and doors open at 6pm for museum members and 6:30pm for non members, with the event starting at 7pm. Following the commemoration, join guest speaker Ric Mixter for The Edmund Fitzgerald Investigations event on November 15th at 6:30pm. This portion of the Working Waterfronts Lecture Series will cover Ric’s 20 years of research into the mighty Fitz, and his collection of the largest film archives of Fitgerald related material. Ric Mixter is one of the most sought out maritime historians in the Midwest, and his documentary on the Fitzgerald is considered to be the most comprehensive available. “Sharing the Fitzgerald story with Michigan’s Maritime Museum is extremely special for me,” says Ric. “The museum is dedicated to our amazing maritime past and I can’t think of a better place to share what I have found about the Fitz.”

Tickets for the lecture series are free for museum members and $10 for non-members. For more information, visit michiganmaritimemuseum.org/events.
