Both engines are based off the same 3.4-liter platform. The 200-hp version tops out at 6,400 rpm, while its lower-power sibling maxes out at 6,000 rpm. Both operate on 87-octane fuel.
Mercury Racing offers the 200R outboard with two different gearcase setups. With a Torque Master gearcase, which is designed for boats that run 80 to 85 mph, total weight is 469 pounds. The 200R is 20 pounds heavier with the Sport Master gearcase, which according to the release is built for boats that run 80 to 100-plus mph.
Added John Buelow, the president of Mercury Marine, in the release, “In recent years, Mercury Marine and Mercury Racing have raised the bar for innovation in the outboard engine market by introducing new V-8 and V-10 models at the top of our range. Now, we have responded to customer demand by expanding our V-6 offerings.”
