Meet The Performance Powerboats P-280 Catamaran
Unlike the lucky folks today and yesterday at the first Performance Boat Center Open House and Boat Show at the multi-brand dealership’s Osage Beach, Mo., headquarters, you won’t get to ride in the first Performance Powerboats P-280 catamaran powered by a Mercury Racing 450R outboard engine this weekend. So thinking you might want some information beyond what you obviously can glean from the pictures—it’s red, it’s sexy and it’s powered by a Mercury Racing 450R outboard engine—I reached out to Performance Boat Center service manager and Performance Powerboats stake-holder Myrick Coil to gather a bit more detail on the 28-footer.
Pulling demo-ride duty today at the inaugural Performance Boat Center Open House and Boat Show, the P-280 catamaran will be offered with various power options. Photos by Jeff Helmkamp copyright Jeff Helmkamp Photos.
I asked the most obvious question first: How fast?
“We’ve had it to 108 mph with a Mercury Max 5 propeller,” said Coil. “That is with two people and 50 gallons of fuel I think with some tuning on prop and all that we will be in hundred-mile-an-hour teens.”
Next up, what are the power options?
“We will for sure offer it with a single 500R outboard,” he said. “I don’t know if we’ll do it with a single 300R, but we will offer it with twin 300Rs. That’s actually the next one coming and it’s already out of the mold.”

Simply beautiful from any angle, the Performance Powerboat P-280 is the latest addition to a catamaran series that includes 36- and 42-foot models.
How about seating configurations?
“It will be offered as a four- or five-seater, depending on the size of the people and the back because it will have a small bench seat,” Coil said, then chuckled. “We didn’t have the rear seats built for the first one yet, so we just put a cooler in there for now.”
How many do you have sold?
“Honestly, I’m not sure,” said Coil. “But all it’s going to take is for people to start going for demo rides in them.”
And for the rest of the day and in the weeks to come, you can bet that’s what Coil will be doing.
Said Coil, “We’ve had it to 108 mph with a Mercury Max 5 propeller.”
