Maritime Museum Lecture Series Kicks Off With Life Saving Service History

The Michigan Maritime Museum’s lecture series kicks off on September 15, 2024 at 6:30pm with historian and author Fred Stonehouse. His presentation will focus on the story of the U.S. Life-Saving Service on the Great Lakes from 1874 to 1915, when it merged with the Revenue Cutter Service and became the U.S. Coast Guard.

The presentation, titled “Forgotten Heroes, The U.S. Life-Saving Service on the Great Lakes,” will present the incredible story of the courage and bravery of the members of this organization, who saved over 55,000 people on the Great Lakes.

“We look forward to having Fred Stonehouse present at the Museum on such a compelling topic,” says Director of Education and Programs Ashley Deming. “This lecture is a perfect complement to the Coast Guard and Life-Saving Service history we share through our exhibits and is especially appropriate as we host the US Life-Saving Service Heritage Association Conference the same week.”
