Long Island Father-And-Son Duo Launching Super Stock Campaign
Well-known in the Northeast for its once-thriving business rigging Doug Wright catamarans, Speedmaster Performance Marine of Long Island, N.Y., will debut its own new 32-foot Doug Wright cat in the second Super Stock-class event— June 8-9 in Guntersville, Ala.—of the 2025 season. The Mercury Racing 300R outboard-equipped raceboat will be throttled by the high-performance rigging shop’s Mike Demeno and driven by his father, John.
Mike Demeno and his father, John, will share a raceboat cockpit for the first time this season.
The team will be called Speedmaster Performance Marine.
Now retired and living in Cape Coral, Fla., the John Demeno is 75 years. Mike Demeno, 44, remains in Long Island running Speedmaster Performance Marine, a third-generation marine business as his grandfather, John, Sr., was a well-known Long Island-based Hatteras Yachts dealer.
Both bring offshore racing experience to the cockpit. From 1977 to 1996, John Demeno competed in multiple class from A to D. His son, who once worked with the late Tony Caliguri at Ocean Outboard, ran in the Super Stock class in the early-to-mid 2000s.
“That’s how I got exposed to outboards,” he said.
Mike Demeno rigged the 32-footer at his family’s Long Island shop.
The duo plans to run a mix of races in addition to the Alabama event, including the new Offshore Powerboat Association event in Freeport, Long Island and XINSURANCE Offshore at the Lake of the Ozarks Central Missouri. They’re also planning on competing in the two Race World Offshore-produced events in Florida, the Clearwater Nationals in September and the Key West Offshore World Championships in November.
“All these years being in the business and racing, we’ve never raced together,” Demeno explained. “That’s why I am doing this. It’s been something we’ve been trying to do for a long time.
“My dad is excited,” he said. “It’s putting a smile on his face. It’s sort of our ‘last hurrah.’”
