Lighthouse Looking for Volunteer Keepers
The White Shoal Lighthouse Preservation Society is looking for two adventure seekers to take the position of first and second assistant lighthouse keeper from May 2025 to September 2025, reports MLive.com. Situated on the Mackinac Straits 20 miles west of the Mackinac bridge, the 113-year-old White Shoal is the tallest lighthouse in the Great Lakes, reaching 125 feet. It is also the most isolated — situated 13 miles offshore from the nearest boat launch.
The positions are isolated, involve a 90-minute commute on water and are not for the faint of heart, but offer incredible sunrise and sunset opportunities in the middle of Lake Michigan. Duties include monitoring mechanical systems, maintaining a log book, keeping accurate count of personnel and guests and identifying and reporting emergencies. Applications open January 1, 2025.
