Lake Cumberland Thunder Run Pushed Back For 2025

For the past three years, organizers Justin Lucas and Dan Weiss have been working on moving the dates for the Lake Cumberland Thunder Run. The Kentucky event has been slated for Father’s Day weekend in mid-June throughout its 16-year history, but seasonal rainfall at that time of year flushes debris from the surrounding woods into the waterway. That pattern has created problems for everyone involved.

Now that all permits and permissions have been secured, the 2025 Thunder Run is officially set for June 27-29. Lucas reached out today to make it official.

“Changing the dates of an event on Lake Cumberland is more difficult than people think,” Lucas explained. “In addition to dealing with the Army Corp or Engineers and the Suntex corporation that owns State Dock Marina, we wanted to make sure we are not going to impact any other event in our region. And I think we’ve done that.

“We’ve been doing this for 16 years, and I can’t tell you how times the event has been hampered by debris in the water,” he continued. “About five years ago, so many people really tore up equipment during the Thunder Run. This used to be a 180-boat event, not that I want that again, but people stopped coming and it was shrinking. People aren’t going to keep bringing their boats back if they think they’re going to get damaged.”

Lucas and Weiss had hoped to be able to the push the event as far into summer as August, but that was not possible thanks to aforementioned factors and agencies that had to approve the date change. Still, Lucas said that he and Weiss are pleased with the later dates they were able to secure.

“It’s definitely better than nothing,” he said. “We’d have liked to make it later, but this was the best we could do and we think it will make a difference.”
