Kuttawa Cannonball Run Corrals 82,000 Horses So Far

The three key metrics for any charity-driven go-fast boating event are boat count, number of participants and total fundraising for whatever worthy cause the event exists to support. But while 75 boats currently are registered for the seventh annual Kuttawa Cannonball Run, June 2-3 in the small Kentucky town—and that puts the event ahead of where it was at this time last year— the organizers are focusing on a different measure of pre-event success. .

Horsepower.

With the 75 high-performance catamarans, center consoles and V-bottom sportboats, the currently registered boats account for a combined 82,000 horsepower, substantially more than a Boeing 747 aircraft at 59,934 horsepower but a whole lot less than a Boeing 777 at 175,000 horsepower.

Silly comparisons notwithstanding, the event organizers are delighted with the response so far. And registration is still open.

“We’re always trying to improve the Kuttawa Cannonball Run experience,” said Terry Martin, who founded the event with his friends Jeff Hoefling and Stephen Miles. “Catering was a huge focus for us last year and it resulted in a huge improvement. The Cutting Edge Catering knocked it out of the part for the Saturday lunch run.”

This time around, Martin explained, the organizers are focusing on the “onshore social experience.” They have a DJ inked for the party tent on Friday and Saturday night. To augment their efforts, the Hu-B’s At Kuttawa restaurant in Kuttawa Harbor is bringing in bands on Friday and Saturday night.

In 2022, the event raised more than $92,000 through its Saturday night auction. Topping that number is another goal for the organizing team.

The Kuttawa Cannonball Run never fails to draw an enthusiastic crowd.

“We’ve acquired several really neat auction items,” Martin said. “They should draw a lot of interest.

“It all seems so simple—invite a couple hundred friends to go boating and have a good time—but we literally work on this event’s content, schedule and logistics year-round,” said Martin. “It’s important for us to continue to see lots of smiles in Old Kuttawa.”

Given enough horespower, this year’s event will be the strongest one yet.
