Kilo Runs Versus Shootouts—The Basics – Speed on the Water
Following the second day of top-speed competition at the 35th annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, American Power Boat Association/Union International Motonautique-sanctioned kilometer runs—kilo runs for short—will be held on the Central Missouri water. So far, a dozen powerboat owners have signed up to participate in the MYCO Trailers-backed event, which is scheduled to begin Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and end at 4:30 p.m.
“We are excited to see that APBA/UIM will sanction this year’s event,” said Denis McComb, the Bradenton, Fla., trailer company’s vice-president of sales and marketing. “Our customers deserve the chance to break speed records and be internationally recognized for their efforts on the water.
It took two full days of kilo runs for this Outerlimits SV 43 to set the existing V-bottom kilo-record of 180.464 in early 2014.
“I am proud to have MYCO Trailers support a great cause, and I look forward to another amazing week Lake of the Ozarks Shootout fun,” he added.
Though both involve top speed, a kilo run is significantly different from a top-speed event such as the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. The Shootout uses radar equipment to capture a boat’s top speed at the end of a three-quarter-mile course.
A kilo run, on the other hand, is a timed event capturing a boat’s average speed over a measured kilometer in two passes from opposite directions. Radar equipment is not part of the kilo-run program. Precise timing equipment is used.
If the 52-foot American Ethanol Mystic catamaran, for example, “radars” at 210-mph this weekend during the Shootout, that number will be recorded for posterity. But if American Ethanol were to take part in the kilo run—another example but one that definitely won’t happen—and averaged 210 mph, it would need to average 210 mph in its next pass from the opposite direction for its kilo-run speed to be official.
