Of all the Florida Powerboat Club members who could have taken home the “Best Catamaran” award during the outfit’s Miami Boat Show Poker Run, there was no better choice than Mauricio Vivanco of Downey, Calif. In October 2021, Vivanco and his equally charming wife, Angie, took delivery of an open-bow DCB Performance Boats M44 Widebody catamaran just in time for the El Cajon, Calif., company’s annual owners regatta in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Powered by a pair of dual-calibration Mercury Racing 1550/1350 engines, the 44-footer stole the show and made its endlessly gracious and humble owners proud.

But the fun was just getting started. The Vivancos stayed at Lake Havasu for the entire week after the regatta and put close to 20 operating hours on the white, black and green cat. In December, Mauricio Vivanco returned to Lake Havasu to test the boat and it topped out at 164 mph with its turbocharged, quad-cam four-valve engines in 1,550-hp mode.

“She probably had another 10 or 15 mph in her,” he said. “But I ran out of lake. “The sound of the engines in 1550 mode was beautiful; it was a rumbling noise Iike I have never heard before,” he added, then laughed. “It was like when I met my wife, except that was love at first sight. This was love at first sound.”
