For Jason and Laurie Moe and their teenage children Katelin and Colton of Washington, boating always has been about family time. But as anyone who’s raised children can tell you, that time gets scarcer as kids get older and more entrenched in their own lives. Katelin Moe is heading into her sophomore year at the University of Washington, while her brother is going into his junior year in high school and has a burning passion—and talent—for racing dirt bikes.

Still, the Moes are a tight family and they try not to miss a moment together on the water. Among their favorite events of any given year is the Boyne Thunder Poker Run in Northern Michigan, which they enjoyed last weekend in Hurry Up, their Outerlimits SC 46 catamaran.
The cat has a canopy, so family portraits during any go-fast boating event can be hard to come by. But as they idled out through the channel from Lake Charlevoix to Lake Michigan last Saturday with their 46-footer’s hatch open, speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden caught Jason and Colton Moe flashing the “hang loose” sign.
Data point about the popular hand-symbol? It started many decades ago among surfers in the Hawaiian Islands as the “shaka sign” and eventually made its way to the mainland and mainstream culture. But it’s always a good one to flash when you’re loving life and having fun, especially with your family.
Just ask the Moes.
