Based on the amount of times his Facebook post was shared and the 500-plus likes the share on our Speedonthewater.com Friends Facebook group received, you’ve probably seen the incredibly adorable images that Iowa’s Cody McDowell, the driver of the Team Allen Lawn Care and Landscaping Super Stock offshore racing team, posted on Saturday of his 7-year-old daughter, Hadley, dressed up for Halloween trick or treating fun as her favorite boat racer, Taylor Scism.

“Hadley didn’t just want to be any offshore power boat racer, she made it clear she was going to be Taylor Scism, aka her idol,” McDowell stated on Facebook. “We are excited to introduce to you all the mini version of Taylor.”
Same braids and all, little Hadley nailed the part, thanks primarily to the wearable, dual-sided, plywood-constructed boat costume adorned with MTI-supplied vinyl that complements the company’s twin Mercury Racing 450R-powered MTI 390XR canopied catamaran that Scism races with veteran throttleman John Tomlinson. It helped that Hadley had her No. 7 TS Motorsports tank top to complete the look.
“Hadley loves Taylor—she calls her ‘The Girl’—so when she told us she wanted to be the ‘The Girl’ for Halloween, we came up with the idea and I reached out to Randy (Scism, the founder of MTI),” said McDowell, who, with his wife, Carrie, has an older daughter, Jaylen, 13 (pictured with her dad and sister), who also loves being around go-fast boats. “I reached out to Randy on Monday with what I had in mind, and he told me to send him some measurements and that they’d work on something. The next day, they made the decals and the following day they arrived here.
“I didn’t know how MTI was going to do it, but they pulled it off perfectly,” he added. “The best part is that Taylor didn’t know anything about it so it was a surprise when Hadley called her on FaceTime Saturday evening.”
McDowell explained that Scism, who has raced in the up-and-coming 450R Factory Stock class for two seasons, has been extremely personable and generous of her time when interacting with his daughter.
“Honestly, she’s so great with Hadley; her whole family is,” McDowell said. “Hadley knows a lot of the race teams and has a closet full of racing jerseys and shirts, but everything is trumped by Taylor and MTI. I think it’s because she comes to the drivers’ meeting and Randy gives her a bag of Skittles or a bag of suckers. He always has something for her and she knows it.”

Of course, Randy Scism loved the idea that his own daughter would be the inspiration for a Halloween costume so he, along with MTI’s talented designed, Wes Jones, made sure McDowell got what he needed.
“When I got Cody’s request, we were more than happy help,” the proud father said. “They nailed it—I mean wasn’t that so cool? I have a feeling we’ll see more costumes like this next year.”
