Image Of The Week—Equal Time For Outboard-Haters

Forget for a moment that outboard engines have kept the high-performance powerboat industry alive for the past 15 years. Forget there isn’t a current go-fast boat-builder who would argue that painfully obvious point. There always will be a tiny faction of folks on the consumer and producer sides who recoil at the sight of outboards on anything other than a fishing boat.

And god bless them—they have the right to hold and express their delusions in whatever nonviolent way they choose.

Titled “Nor-Tech At 35—Talking Flyers,” an article that ran last Thursday provoked Pavlovian responses from a few devoted members of the anti-outboard club. Like the models of Nor-Tech Monte Carlos, most Flyers have been with customer-chosen outboards. Precious (if that’s the right word) few have been done with inboards.

But lo-and-be-freaking hold, I spied one during last Saturday’s Fort Myers Offshore lunch run to Three Fisherman Restaurant in North Naples, Fla. There haven’t been many Monte Carlos or Flyers built—period—and most left Nor-Tech with outboards. That makes one with inboard power a unicorn. So I called my friends Henrik Margård and Geoff Tomlinson at Nor-Tech to learn more about it.

The boat is a 2013 model-year 420 Monte Carlo owned by Dave Stepanek. The 42-footer is powered by twin 420-hp Yanmar diesel engines.

Consider this equal time granted.
