Fun fact: There are 1,864 islands in the St. Lawrence River between the United States and Canada. But “visit the 1,864 Islands” didn’t exactly roll off the tongue. Going with 1,000 Islands kept things simpler.
Or the first folks to visit the area just got tired of counting.

Another fun fact? One of the most famous of these rocky dots in the mighty river is Dark Island. That’s because it’s home to Singer Castle, which was built by millionaire Frederick Bourne of Singer sewing machine fame in 1905, according to the Singer Castle website.
Open for tours in the summer, Singer Castle is a head-turner. And among the noggins turned during last weekend’s 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run were those of MTI’s Randy Scism and his daughter, Taylor, Shaun Peters and Tom Stuart.
The MTI crew got a great view of the historic structure from its 50-foot center console demo boat, which—let’s face it—is something of a castle itself.
Which one would you take if offered? The smart answer is both—if that’s an option—because you’re going to need a fast 50-footer to haul your groceries to your Gothic island home.
