Rough-water races deliver the kind of high-flying action we all love, and speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden delivered dozens of them from yesterday’s American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series season-opener in Cocoa Beach, Fla. But when it comes to rowdy water, there’s another classic, telltale image—raceboats dipping between swells.
Despite a mild forecast, the waters off Cocoa Beach, Fla., kicked up for yesterday’s event. Photo by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.
Case in point? Boden’s capture of Boatfloater.com and Sun Print as they ran side by side during yesterday’s Mod V-class race. It’s not as dramatic as a big-air photo, but for all intents and purposes it tells exactly the same story about the sea conditions.
In a nod to the venue’s evil-water notoriety, Sarasota, Fla.-based Stephen Kildahl, who shares the cockpit of Boatfloater.com with his father, Steve, described yesterday’s conditions as “average rough.”
“But we didn’t think it would be that rough with how early we were racing,” he said.
The next contest in the APBA series is the June 2-4 Lake Race at the Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri. Look for complete advance and real-time coverage on speedonthewater.com.
