Howe 2 Live Reviews First MTI 440X, Offshore Season Preview, Mercury Racing 400R Buzz, Top Gun Fight 1130 Project And More Featured In New Digital Mag
It didn’t start out this way, but the Perfect 10 headline above Mercury Racing’s MTI 390X cover/demo boat powered by two of the engine builder’s all-new V-10 400R outboards ended up being a perfect summation of the first of three feature-filled Speed On The Water digital magazines going live this year. The issue is now available to download for subscribers or available for single-issue orders.

Perfect 10 is the headline of speedonthewater.com founder Matt Trulio’s article spotlighting Mercury Racing’s innovative V-10 400R, which was introduced in February during the Miami International Boat Show in conjunction with the Wisconsin company’s 50th anniversary celebration and two boat demo days south of Miami at Grove Harbour Marina in Coconut Grove. The headline makes perfect sense and the image of the 39-foot catamaran was captured in typical perfection by Tom Leigh of Tommy Gun Images.
Yet the Perfect 10 description can be applied to several things featured in the issue starting with the first production 440X catamaran delivered by MTI to the captivating couple behind Howe 2 Live—Mike and Sarah Howe. The Howes discussed their adventure crossing Florida in their new boat that they described as the “the pinnacle of performance boating evolution.”
Sounds like the Howes got themselves a perfect boat. Then there’s Travis Pastrana. He wouldn’t call himself a Perfect 10, but he’s probably received scores like that throughout his high-flying, action-packed career. Award-winning journalist Mark Gray caught up with the superstar to discuss is recent interest in boat racing and what it’s like being a cheer dad.
While Pastrana’s busy schedule has him as an alternate driver with Brit Lilly on the Huski Chocolate Class 1 team this season, the offshore racing season is going to be spectacular either way. It won’t be perfect—nothing in offshore racing is—but it may end up being one of the best seasons in many years. Along with Trulio, speedonthewater.com contributing editor Eric Colby provides class-by-class insight on the upcoming season. Colby also provides a perfect overview—complemented by chief photographer Pete Boden’s perfectly timed images—of how the 2022 Key West World Championship shook out.
Finally, for those Cigarette Racing Team fans out there, the recent updates Florida Powerboat Club president Stu Jones made to his 2000 model-year Cigarette 38 Top Gun—repowering the 38-footer with twin Mercury Racing 565 engines and wrapping it with its new Top Gun Flight 1130 theme—could be a Perfect 10.
