How To Catch Thunder On Cocoa Beach—When You’re Nowhere Near Cocoa Beach

How To Catch Thunder On Cocoa Beach—When You’re Nowhere Near Cocoa Beach

Like my longtime friend and Powerboat P1 livestream broadcast partner/leader Mike Yowaiski, I’ll be in Cocoa Beach, Fla., this weekend for Thunder On Cocoa Beach, the first event of the Union Internationale Motonautique Class 1 World Championship and the second event of the American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series. So will thousands of offshore racing fans.

Yet they represent a fraction of the sport’s worldwide fanbase.

So far, 58 teams have registered for this weekend’s event. Photo from Thunder On Cocoa Beach 2024 by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix

With the exception of watch parties such as the those at the Redhead Lakeside Grill adjacent to Performance Boat Center in Osage Beach, Mo., most folks will watch the races at home.

As of 6 a.m. this morning, 57 teams had registered fort Thunder On Cocoa Beach. (Click here for a more-detailed look at the roster for the weekend.)

Here’s a quick look at the current schedule—key word being “current” as offshore powerboat racing schedules are prone to last-minute changes—and the current boat counts by class:

Saturday, May 18

1 p.m.—Bracket classes 700, 600, 500 and 3x (13 total)
2 p.m.—Class 1 qualifying (4 teams)
3 p.m.—Super Stock (12 teams)

Sunday, May 19

10 a.m.—Class 1 (4 teams)
11:14 a.m.—Mod V (7 teams) and Bracket classes 400, 300, 200 (6 total)
1 p.m.—450R Factory Stock (7 teams) and Super V (2 teams)
2:30 p.m.—Super Cat (7 teams)

With the exception of Class 1, which will be carried on MAVTV per a new two-year agreement with Powerboat P1, all racing will be broadcast live on the P1 Offshore Facebook page.

But there is an exception to this exception: If Class 1 qualifying is broadcast live, it will be carried on the P1 Offshore Facebook page, not on MAVTV. Azam Rangoonwala, the chief executive officer of Powerboat P1, could not confirm that qualifying will be covered when this story went live.
