Hook To Test Livestream Setup For 2023 Ocean Cup Season

The driving forces behind the Ocean Cup offshore powerboat endurance racing series, Nigel Hook and Janet Wilson are traveling today from Southern California to Daytona Beach, Fla., to celebrate a friend’s induction into the Motorsports Hall of Fame on Tuesday. The following day, the couple will head to Cape Canaveral to meet with Roger Norman, a Baja 1,000 competitor and the owner of SCORE International—the Southern California Offshore Enthusiasts off-road racing series—since 2012.

Using satellite-based Starlink technology, Ocean Cup series organizers plan to stream all the action for their 2023 endurance racing series. Photos from the 2023 Race World Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla., by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.

“We’re really excited about this trip because we are going to meet with Roger to test a video-streaming system using Starlink in JHook, which is the name we’ve given our 52-foot Mystic Powerboats catamaran,” Wilson explained. “We will probably be at the boat ramp around 10 a.m. and on the water by 11. a.m. Kerry Bartlett of Thunder On Cocoa Beach (they May 18-21 season-opener for the 2023 American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series) is joining us with his social media team.”

According to Resi.io, an Internet streaking services company, “Starlink is a new satellite Internet service being developed by SpaceX. Using thousands of small satellites deployed as clusters in low earth orbit, combined with ground receivers, Starlink will be capable of providing broadband Internet connections to locations that were previously inaccessible.”

Such locations include the open ocean, which makes the technology ideal for being Ocean Cup action into the homes of viewers worldwide on Oceancup.TV. The series organizers recently acquired and are developing the steaming platform, will carry the live feed.

The Ocean Cup series has five races scheduled this year.

“The plan is to for all of the Ocean Cup boats using Starlink and streaming live video during the world record runs on OceanCup.TV,” said Wilson. “We will be able to interview pilots during the run! We’re very excited about this technology which is used by Roger in his Baja series.”

Added Hook, “Off-road and offshore racing are very similar. Trophy trucks and Class 1 boats are fast and fly, so I’m keen to get Roger’s feedback running across the ocean waves.”
