Among the go-fast boats that will tackle today’s 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run in Clayton, N.Y., is a new 28-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran owned by Bryan Swinney of Vernon, N.J. Named Bug Money and powered by twin Mercury Racing 300R outboard engines, the 28-footer will be among the smaller entries in the 100-boat fleet.

But no one is more likely to enjoy today’s action on the water more than the 37-year-old pest-control company owner. Not only is the 1,000 Islands run Swinney’s first event in the cat since taking delivery of it in late June, he considers the St. Lawrence River and the 1,000 Islands area his “home-water.”

Swinney and Stephanie Munson, his fiancé, arrived in Clayton earlier this week. They’ll be joined in their new Skater today by their friend, Matt Baker.

“We come here all the time—it’s only five hours from home—and we have friends who live up here,” he said. “We arrived Thursday and once we got settled we took our buddy on a quick rip toward Cedar Point. Yesterday, we ran up to Boldt Castle and Singer Castle and just hung on the water for a while.”

So far the boat’s gracious and grateful owner has been delighted with its performance. As previously reported on speedonthewater.com, Swinney and Munson spent the better part of a week running the cat on Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River in the Detroit Metro after taking delivery from the builder in Douglas, Mich. And now they get to enjoy it on familiar waters.

“For a 28-foot boat, it handles rough water really well,” said Swinney. “And just the fact that we can cruise effortlessly at 80 or 90 mph is something I love.

“I’m getting ready for the captain’s meeting,” he added, then chuckled. “I am really ready to run today.”

Swinney and company stayed busy and had a ball yesterday during the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run powerboat ride session for Make-A-Wish children and their families.
