Granet Out Of The Booth And Into The Cockpit For Midwest Challenge

Offshore racing play-by-play broadcaster Mike Yowaiski and this reporter will have to do without the ever-informative, entertaining and general excitable Marc Grant this weekend in the Powerboat P1 broadcast studio for the Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge in Sheboygan, Wis. Granet is joining his longtime friend and fellow veteran offshore racer Randy Sweers in Team Savage, a 32-foot Doug Wright catamaran competing in the Saturday and Sunday Super Stock races.

Though Granet is best known as the driver for the former Miss GEICO team, he has a Super Stock racing background, including sharing the cockpit with Sweers. Sweers will throttle and Granet, who is replacing regular wheel-man Bryan Marquardt for the Sheboygan races, will drive the 32-footer, which is sponsored by Chad Havens of Texas.

“I got a last-minute call las night from my good friends at Team Savage and they asked me to jump in with Randy,” Granet explained. “Bryan and his wife, Danielle, have a business conflict so they cannot make the race. Knowing how important the Sheboygan races are to Mercury Racing, Powerboat P1 and team sponsor Chad Havens, they asked if I could be available.”

Granet is eager to climb back into the cockpit for a couple of strong reasons.

“First, I know they have put a lot of time into safety and testing, and racing with and experienced throttleman like Randy is super easy and a natural fit,” he said. “Although I will miss the antics in the production booth with my broadcast team of Matt Trulio, Mike Yowaiski and Case Productions, they know my heart is always on the racecourse.

“The competition is always well-prepared and fierce in the Super Stock class,” he added. “So no doubt it will be exciting.”

Granet will return to the Powerboat P1 broadcast team the St. Petersburg Grand Prix, the final race of the Union International Motonautique Class 1 World Championship Series, September 1-3, in Southwest Florida.
