Participants in last weekend’s Orange Beach Powerboat Week two-day poker run produced by the Florida Powerboat Club got a first-person view of MTI’s new “demo” 440X catamaran. The Mercury Racing500R outboard engine-powered cat turned heads for its unusual color scheme, which incorporates vibrant fuchsia on a mostly silver-and-gray background.

But what they didn’t know was that the decision-makers at the Wentzville, Mo., company considered the same hues for its first 440X demo boat. That model ended up being mostly blue and silver.
MTI vice-president Taylor Scism, who piloted the 44-footer in the poker run with husband Shaun Peters, laid out the backstory.
“The colors of the 440X we took to Orange Beach were the original colors for original demo boat we built last year,” she explained. “But we went with blue at the last minute.
