Gallery Of The Week: Making Waves At The Tickfaw 200

If you read Jason Johnson’s comprehensive story yesterday on the return of the Tickfaw 200 Poker Run in Springfield, La., after a three-year break, you already know the event delivered a robust comeback. The Tickfaw 200 remains among the colorful events in the go-fast boating world, and more than a few folks who made it to last weekend’s happening are already planning to be there next year.

Though speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden, who captured all the images for yesterday’s feature article, is a Tickfaw 200 veteran, contributing photographer Jeff Helmkamp was shooting it for the first time last weekend.

For some reason, participants couldn’t stop waving at him. Maybe they knew he was a rookie. Or maybe they were just having a great time. Either way, we have the proof.

For Helmkamp, the entire experience was unique.

Wave after wave.

“The Tickfaw River is like no other setting for an event that I have been,” he said. “I started my year in Islamorada (Fla.) where there is just open water, ocean on one side and bay on the other and it’s wide open. Then I went to Lake Havasu where the water is really clear and the mountains are everywhere you look.

“The Tickfaw River is narrow,” he continued. “There are multiple places you can only get by boat. Then there are the trees sticking out of the water, and the trees filled with hanging moss All of that was just a such cool scene and it provided a great background for every photo I took.”

Though no one in this catamaran waved at photographer Jeff Helmkamp, he did catch at least one passenger’s attention.
