Gallery Of The Week: Great Starts In Cocoa Beach
From a visual perspective, the start tends to be the most spectacular element of any offshore powerboat race. That’s no dig on the sport—not even even close—but you’ll never find so many boats running deck-to-deck and heading toward a turn than you will when the green flag flies.
Captured from the air, water or land, starts often produce the most dramatic images.
Yesterday afternoon’s Super Cat-class start was a gem. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.
Just ask speedonthewater.com photographer Pete Boden. He flat-out nailed the Super Stock, Mod V, Super Cat, Class 1 and 450R Factory Stock starts at Thunder On Cocoa Beach last weekend. The Atlantic Ocean waters off the famed cradle Florida surfing civilization were as docile and colorful as they’ve been in the event’s 13-year history, which made for even prettier pictures from the accomplished lensman.
Starts in the Super Stock, Mod V and 450R Factory Stock ranks were spectacular.
The first race of the Union Internationale Motonautique Class 1 World Championship Series—and the second event of the American Power Boat Association Offshore World Championship Series—is now in the books and you can read all about it in Eric Colby’s fine day No. 1 and day No. 2 stories on speedonthewater.com. Of course, Boden also brought home a slew of other action images from weekend. They are some of his best work to date and you’ll more of them throughout the year (and there are plenty supporting Colby’s excellent reporting).
Next up on the schedule for the Class 1 and APBA circuits is the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, June 30-July 2 in Southwest Florida. As it did in Cocoa Beach, Powerboat P1, which holds the marketing and media rights to Class 1 racing, is producing both events.
Class 1 shot hard toward turn No. 1 when the green flag flew.
