Gallery Of The Week: Boyne Goes Big For No. 20

You don’t have to keep taking speedonthewater.com’s word for it—the Boyne Thunder Poker Run in Northern Michigan truly is a one-of-a-kind performance boating event. After 20 years, there’s no question the event is one of the best in the nation.

Start with the longtime supporters and participants (many of whom have been involved for 20 years or close to it), then ask the first-time attendees (there was a larger number of Boyne Thunder “rookies” than ever before this year), and finally fire questions to the locals who come out in droves to witness the baddest “boat show” in the state of Michigan. Chances are you won’t get any negative responses. Well, except for the people who had to wait in line to walk Boyne City’s F. Grant Moore Municipal Harbor docks on Friday night to check out the dozens of cool catamarans, center consoles and V-bottoms on display.

This year those in attendance enjoyed and welcomed the rather mild weather—the speedonthewater.com merchandise tent could have used sweatshirts as several people asked about one—and soaked in the lively vibes as they made their way between the municipal harbor and the Stroll the Streets showcase of boats, trucks, engines, classic and muscle cars, live bands and various vendors.

That energy poured into Saturday’s main event and the boaters kicked it into high gear for the masses that came out to check out all of the hardware from near and far. And, despite a little bit of rain as the poker run was starting, the powerboat owners and their friends and family members seemed to enjoy being part of such a celebrated event.

Speedonthewater.com definitely was happy to be a part of the 20th anniversary celebration. Not only as producers of the 100-page event program, but as sponsors, participants and fans of the charming poker run. Giving back is part of the speedonthewater.com DNA, just as it is with many companies and individuals in the performance boat community.

Keeping with the giving spirit, a gallery of images from Friday’s festivities are included above. An in-depth recap of the poker run and its celebratory dinner and awards party will go live early this week with tons of action-packed images from chief photographer Pete Boden.
