Florida Powerboat Club Summer Bahamas Adventure No. 1—Checking Boxes

Florida Powerboat Club Summer Bahamas Adventure No. 1—Checking Boxes

The first of three Florida Powerboat Club treks to the Bahamas this summer, last week’s event saw 13 boats make the crossing from South Florida to Bimini. The group stayed at the Chub Cay property before heading to the Atlantis Resort on Grand Bahama for three days.

Their Bimini-stay included familiar stops as well as something new.

“Most participants checked off the standard yet always cool Bimini ‘activity boxes’ including feeding the stingrays and snorkeling at the Sapona shipwreck,” Stu Jones, the president of the Florida Powerboat Club. “But we also discovered a new-to-our-group, mile-long beach on the northeast corner of North Bimini. That was a big hit with everybody.”

Intermittent rain fell during the first day of the group’s Grand Bahama stay, and that forced the Jones and company to scrub a planned outing and make the most of the Atlantis Resort property.

“The weather cleared up the following day and we ran to Rose Island, which is less than 10 miles away, where the group spent time on Sandy Beach and enjoyed a rustic beachfront spot called Footprints, which is a favorite hangout for local boaters,” said Jones.

Bahama poker-run winners Mike and Carlene Leardi had the only sportboat in the mix.

All but one of the vessels in the fleet was not of the outboard-engine-powered center console kind. That boat was a Cigarette 38 Top Gun owned by Mike and Carlene Leardi of Kansas City, Mo. Jones and his crew passed out poker cards on Bimini and Grand Bahama, and the Leardis, who brought their daughter, Abbie, and son, Michael on the trip, ended up with the winning poker-hand for the event.

“Other than a bit of rain the weather cooperated with light winds favorable seas, especially for the outboard trip to Bimini and the return trip to South Florida,” said Jones.

The Florida Powerboat Club head and his wife, Jackie, will have a break from their event organization-and-production duties before the club’s next trip to the Bahamas, a four-day getaway to Bimini and West End, Grand Bahama starting July 16. But they’ll be back on the water next week as guests of Devin Wozencraft on this 34-foot Victory catamaran at the inaugural Bago Big Bet event in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

“We’re looking forward to heading up to Wisconsin, the home of Mercury Racing, and enjoying Lake Winnebago,” said Jones.

Far from seeking rescue from a a desert island, the Florida Powerboat Group showed its appreciation.
