A tropical depression in the Caribbean is making life interesting for Florida Powerboat Club head Stu Jones and his staff ahead of this week’s Key West Poker Run. Wednesday’s forecast for rain and wind is the worst of the week and Thursday’s weather outlook isn’t looking much better. So Jones sent an email this afternoon to all club members registered for the run suggesting that those originally set to depart with the Wednesday wave leave a day early and go with the Tuesday group.
Wet and windy weather is in the forecast for the Florida Keys this week.
Approximately 240 boats are signed up for the event.
“Holding off departure to go with the Thursday or Friday groups is another option,” he explained. “But it looks like Thursday will have significant rain, so I suggest open-cockpit catamarans and V-bottoms wait until Friday, which has the best looking forecast of the week, or leave earlier with the Tuesday group if possible.”
Participants who opt to change their departure day must inform the Florida Powerboat Club staff by email or phone.
At present, the Wednesday departure has not been canceled. Jones and company are simply taking a proactive to making the trip as comfortable as possible for club members.
“These challenges with weather are a normal part of managing the Key West Poker Run due to fall weather patterns,” he wrote in the email. “We have dealt with these situations countless times.”
