Florida Powerboat Club Poised To Complete Summer Bahamas Run Event-Series
It’s been more than a decade since the Florida Powerboat Club led three treks from South Florida to the Bahamas in a single summer. But come August 14-19 with its “Northern Bahamas Hop,” a 13-boat fleet will put the exclamation point on the club’s 2024 Bahamas adventure trifecta.
According to Florida Powerboat Club president Stu Jones, his organization’s last Bahamas run of the summer also could be its most intriguing.

“The format for this run focuses on more-remote destinations in the Northern Bahamas including West End, Spanish Cay, Great Guana Cay and, finally, Hope Town,” Jones explained. “These destinations were not attainable for five years after Hurricane Dorian in 2019. The storm destroyed many resort towns and popular marinas in those locations.
“Last summer, we returned to this area to discover that its charm had been restored,” he added.
Unlike most Florida Powerboat Club events, which attract 30 to 250 boats depending on the time of year and destination, the Bahamas Hop is necessarily small. Jones said this year’s event could handle two more boats, which would bring the total to its maximum capacity.
“This event would be difficult to manage with more than 15 boats at one time,” he said. “The resorts are smaller and there’s a lot of tricky water involved. Plus, having more than 50 people at a meal is a deal-breaker at most of the restaurants.
“So you have to really change your strategy when you operate these smaller events in the remote islands,” he continued. “For example, we like to just maintain 50 to 60 mph so we can enjoy the scenery. But I think we’ve figured it out and we have a great formula that everyone seems to love.”
