Fish Beer Friday Review: White Shark Wheat Ale

As we close out another week at the OTW office, the refrigerator has been a bit of a revolving door. Recently, our staff has taste-tested Rockport Brewing’s Jetty Juice and Pescato—two equally refreshing, locally-made brews with entirely different flavor profiles. This week, we’re trying out Hog Island’s White Shark Wheat—a light American wheat ale that has less of a “bite” than one would expect.
For a beer named after Great White Sharks—which have infamously become regular visitors to the outer beaches of Cape Cod due to rampant seal populations—White Shark Wheat is very pleasant and palatable. Its flavor includes mild notes of toasted wheat with just a hint of sweet citrus, and it finishes with slightly malty aftertaste. I suppose the name derives more from the beer’s foamy great white head much less than its strength, which comes in at just 4.2% ABV.
Between the rich golden color, average ABV, and pleasantly hoppy aroma, White Shark Wheat boasts superior drinkability whether you’re seal (or shark) watching on the Cape’s Atlantic-facing beaches, or sharing a pint with a friend at a local pub.
If you’re someone who fancies a light, flavorful, and unexpectedly crushable wheat ale, I highly recommend grabbing a 4-pack at your nearest Kappy’s or beer outlet. Or, pay a visit to Hog Island’s locations in Orleans and Wellfleet during your next trip down Cape.
