Fish Beer Friday Review: Jetty Juice by Rockport Brewing Co.
Jetties, by design, are intended to inhibit beach erosion or shelter marinas. But these man-made, multi-purpose structures are much more than just a protective pile of rocks. Jetties are special places where recreational fishermen—often accompanied by coolers full of cold beer and the day’s catch—gather for long hours in pursuit of acclaimed gamefish, like striped bass, bluefish, Spanish mackerel and tautog. It only makes sense to pack those coolers with a well-rounded and refreshing brew, and Rockport Brewing’s Jetty Juice fits the bill.
I first discovered this hazy, dangerously-smooth IPA while searching the local Kappy’s for a seasonal beer from my neighborhood brewery. “Cape Ann is close enough,” I thought, reaching for the alluring 4-pack of blaze-orange cans; the vibrant colors truly popped out among a crowded shelf of aluminum. A few hours later, my coworkers and I were juicing to close out another week at the OTW office.
Jetty Juice is simultaneously simple and complex. It has a sweet and deliciously citrusy flavor profile that is accented by crisp notes of grapefruit. I never imagined that a hazy IPA with a 6.3% ABV could taste so light and airy.
Those citrusy notes really explode on your tastebuds, which I later learned, is referred to as a “full mouthfeel”. The beer’s mellow sweetness is countered by a dry finish which, in addition to its pleasant but pungent aroma, makes Jetty Juice so enjoyable. They went down easy in the office, so I can only imagine their drinkability is amplified during a sweltering summer day spent fishing from the jetty. Once opened, it would be tough to put down—unless, of course, there’s a fish on the line.
Just be careful to not juice too hard while you’re out on the rocks.
