First Canopied Outerlimits SC 37 Catamaran No. 1 Headed To Rigging

First Canopied Outerlimits SC 37 Catamaran No. 1 Headed To Rigging

The general manager and longtime public face of Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats, Dan Kleitz is still pondering a specific model-name for the canopied version of the Bristol, R.I., company’s 37-foot catamaran. “Maybe SCC 37, maybe something else, maybe nothing, just leave it as a ‘canopied’ SC 37,” he explained. “There’s no rush at the moment. We have time.”

The first canopied Outerlimits SC 37 catamaran is headed to rigging next week.

Kleitz and his fellow Outerlimits teammates do have time, though not a lot of it. Rigging for the first canopied 37-footer, which will be powered by twin Mercury Racing 500R outboard engines, is slated to begin next week. Ryan Schwarzen of Missouri’s Kutting Edge Interiors crafted its interior. Kentucky-based powerboat-painter Stephen Miles has just started designing what will be vinyl-graphics for the cat on its painted yellow foundation.

The graphics will be produced and applied by a company in Michigan, which is the home-state of the SC 37’s owner. The client is a repeat Outerlimits owner of the canopied V-bottom kind.

The catamaran was constructed top to bottom with what Kleitz described as a “specifically engineered” carbon-fiber-and-epoxy lamination schedule. Though he emphasized that the cat is a “pleasure boat” and not intended for racing, it has a roll-bar and a hull-bottom escape hatch.

“As everyone knows, we pride ourselves on the construction quality and strength of our boats,” Kleitz said. “Canopied or open-cockpit, we know they can hold up.”

Despite the trend toward eight-seat cockpits in the sport cat market, the canopied model—like its open-cockpit forerunner—has six seats.

The yellow 37-footer is constructed of carbon fiber and epoxy.

“The interiors are identical,” Kleitz explained. “Having six seats instead of eight gives everyone more room. The seats are comfortable, there is plenty of legroom and lots of open space. It’s a very comfortable interior.

“We’re still the only company that offers canopied and open-cockpit catamarans and V-bottom sportboats, and we can’t wait to get the first one out there so people can see it,” he continued. “It will be in the water by the end of the year.”

If a model name is in the cards for the canopied SC 37 catamaran, the time to come up with one could arrive sooner rather than Kleitz and company think.

“Maybe SCC 37,” Kleitz mused aloud, then laughed. “Oh wait, no, SCC is already the name of a college football conference. That’s OK. If we need a name, we’ll figure it out.”
