The founder of Elite Poker Runs LLC and the organizer of the events under its umbrella, Anthony Scioli wanted to set dates and open registration for the eighth annual Erie Poker Run based in Erie, Pa., months ago. But with this year’s summer travel boom, logistics such as securing a room block for the September 30-October 1 event proved challenging for the Buffalo, N.Y.-based restaurant owner.

“With everyone traveling this year, it was just a lot tougher to nail down everything this year,” said Scioli. “I still want to encourage everyone interested to sign up early when we open registration because it makes planning things like meals and ordering event shirts in the correct sizes for everyone a lot easier.”

Planning delays also forced the dedicated organizer to select the early fall dates for the event, which ran August for the past two years but originally was a June happening. Though Lake Erie is among the most unpredictable of the Great Lakes and it has dished up nasty water and weather more than a few times for Scioli and his guests, the event—with its later dates—has seen exceptional conditions for the past two years.

Scioli originally had hoped to produce a poker run in Buffalo August 7-8, but he has canceled the event this year.

“It’s a no-go because there was too much red tape at the venue I wanted,” he said. “But registration for the 2023 Buffalo run will open soon.”
