Deadly TikTok Trend Targets Boaters

Dangerous social media trends are nothing new. Recently there was a “Dragon’s Breath Challenge” that involved the ingesting of liquid nitrogen that injured dozens, a 15-year-old girl died as a result of a “Benadryl Challenge,” and, if you can believe it, a NyQuil-marinated chicken recipe known as “sleepy chicken” required the FDA to intervene. In a world where common sense isn’t that common and young, impressionable people seek validation via likes and shares, these trends are alarming to say the least.

It’s a new TikTok trend targeted at boaters that might be one of the deadliest yet. #BoatJumping–as the name implies–involves filming someone as they jump from a boat at a high rate of speed into the wake. As serious boaters know, hitting the water at speed can be like hitting concrete; according to several media outlets as many four people have been killed in recent months as a result of the challenge. A recent victim was a father whose wife and children were on the boat at the time.

From everything we know about the Power & Motoryacht audience, we don’t think you’re likely to be the kind of boaters that allows an intentional MOB but we all have children, nieces and nephews and friends with children that might be pressured to attempt a challenge like this; please remind them that no amount of likes is worth a life.
